Coronavirus: 44 new deaths, 1,355 new cases in Orange County on Jan. 31 – OCRegister

Forty-four new deaths were reported by the county on Sunday, raising the total number of COVID fatalities to 3,062. More than one-third of the reported deaths, 1,187, have been in January.

The data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or gathered through the course of case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent death recorded was on Jan. 22.

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 1,355 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, Jan. 31, increasing the cumulative total in the county to 232,391 cases since tracking began.

The county also reported 1,412 patients in local hospitals, which is 30 fewer than the previous report. There are 392 patients listed in intensive care units on Sunday, two fewer than in Saturday’s report. The hospital patient totals are about the same level as where they were the middle of December.

An estimated 21,578 cases of the virus have been recorded in Orange County in the last 14 days.

The county update said 2,681,673 tests have been given for the coronavirus since testing began locally, with at least 16,044 new tests since the previous report.

Of the cumulative 3,062 deaths reported from the virus, 830 were skilled nursing facility residents, 329 were in assisted living facilities, one was an O.C. jail inmate and five were listed as homeless.

The county’s breakdown of deaths by age is as follows:

  • 85 and older: 33.96% (1,040, up 14)
  • 75-84: 23.22% (711, up 7)
  • 65-74: 19.37% (593, up 10)
  • 55-64: 13.26% (406, up 5)
  • 45-54: 6.56% (201, up 2)
  • 35-44: 2.32% (71, up 6)
  • 25-34: 1.08% (33)
  • 18-24: 0.2% (6)
  • 17 and younger: 0.03% (1)

It is estimated 175,513 people have recovered from the virus as of Sunday. The count of people who have recovered is based on the prior 28-day cumulative case count.

Data posted each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials emphasize. More information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
