‘He’s Already Driving Us’ – Aston Martin F1 Team Boss Reveals Sebastian Vettel Isn’t Lacking Self Confidence

Sebastian Vettel celebrates after the German Grand Prix race

Sebastian Vettel looks ready to start a new chapter in his F1 career with Aston Martin. However, his previous chapter with Ferrari didn’t exactly have a happy ending. Quite to the contrary, Vettel found himself struggling to get a grip over the lackluster SF1000. His teammate Charles Leclerc beat him comprehensively in the course of the campaign, leaving the German to reflect on his miserable haul of just 33 points.

As such, there remains a certain group of fans who are skeptical of the 4-times world champion’s appointment with the Silverstone-based outfit. Will Vettel ever be able to banish the horrors of 2020? Has it damaged him to an extent where we’ll never see the best of him again? Team boss Otmar Szafnauer certainly doesn’t think so.

Szafnauer believes that the German is still as confident as ever. He said (translated by Google), “He’s already driving us. He is very inquisitive. He keeps asking us: Why do you do it this way and why not differently? In just two days he had so many questions. He not only asks us questions, but also passes on his experiences.

“That is exactly what we need. We want to turn every stone to improve performance so that we can say in March that we made the best of our possibilities over the winter. Both Seb and us as a team. I don’t see a lack of motivation, no lack of self-confidence.”

With the resources of Aston Martin now open to them, Szafnauer believes the team that was once a mid-table finisher can make the jump to being a top team. But being a top team also requires them to display a great deal of consistency. Will they be able to do it?

Otmar replied, “Yes, we have to. If you are consistently at the top, you drive different races. Sebastian will help us with that. We have to get used to it. But we can. Over time, we’ll fight at the top more and more often – and feel more comfortable up there too.”

Vettel will be at the forefront of this revolution, but he may be starting the new season on the back foot. Unlike in previous years, Sebastian won’t be able to test any car and will have to solely rely on the Bahrain pre-season tests to gain an understanding of his new team and car.

Will the 4-times world champion deliver on the lofty expectations asked of him? We shall find out soon.
