The Bay series 2 episode 5: Is Tony Manning’s marriage over and has Stephen Marshbrook’s murderer been found?
Warning: spoilers ahead for series two episode five of The Bay.
In the penultimate episode of series two of The Bay, the boss of the police force, Tony Manning (Daniel Ryan), is at a low point in his life, grappling with the news that his wife wants to separate from him and slipping up in his investigation into the murder of Stephen Marshbrook (Stephen Tompkinson).
Lisa Armstrong (Morven Christie) comes to his aid, going to collect him after a rough night while dealing with her own emotional turmoil at the same time.
In the wake of the death of their colleague Med Kharim (Taheen Modak), everyone in the police force is feeling strained as they desperately try to get to the bottom of who killed Stephen and why.
Here are the biggest questions we have after the latest episode of The Bay.
Is Tony’s marriage over?
Throughout the series, viewers have seen Tony try his best to stay composed at work while behind the scenes, he appears to be slowly unravelling.
Early on, Lisa catches him sleeping in the office, although she doesn’t pry as to why he’s not at home.
In tonight’s episode, after his wife Ellen (Kerrie Taylor) tells him that she wants a divorce after changing the locks to their house, Tony finally reaches his breaking point, heading to the pub and getting so drunk that he gets into a fight and requires Lisa to come and pick him up.
Is there any salvation for Tony’s relationship with Ellen, or will he have to face the realisation that he is now on his own?
Will the family reveal their connection to Breakwater?
The name Breakwater appears to be the key to solving both Stephen and Med’s murders.
So why is Stephen’s family so intent on keeping it all under wraps?
In episode three, Med is targeted in a hit-and-run after he is spotted investigating properties linked to Breakwater Developments that had been used for illegal purposes.
Although the patriarch of Stephen’s family, Bill Bradwell (James Cosmo) tells the police he knows nothing about the Breakwater account at his law firm, in this episode he divulges some more information about how he got involved with the seedy characters behind the company.
While Tony has uncovered the fact that Bill knows more than he’s letting on – albeit revealing that he came across the information without permission – it still doesn’t seem as though the entire family is willing to be completely honest with the police.
Will Madeleine take Oliver away from Rose?
As if the case of Stephen’s murder didn’t already have enough twists and turns, last week viewers discovered that Rose (Sharon Small) isn’t actually Oliver’s (Leo Ashton) birth mother.
His biological mother is Madeline Hookway (Sian Breckin), who used to work at the Bradwell and Marshbrook family law firm and had an affair with Stephen.
Years later, having seemingly been swindled out of Oliver’s life by Stephen, Madeline has returned and wants access to her son – something that Rose is incredibly fearful of.
As there are no records to show that Rose adopted Oliver as her own, she may have to face the prospect of letting Madeline become a part of her son’s life.
Is Lisa right to question Andy’s motives?
Lisa’s relationship with her ex-Andy has gone from being complicated to far beyond, as the pair slept together after he consoled her in the wake of Med’s death.
When Lisa is asked to fetch Tony from the pub, she calls up Andy to help her out – leaving her questioning why he was her first port of call.
As she breaks down over the fact that Tony, the most dependable person in her life, is also experiencing struggles of his own, Lisa turns to Andy, tears streaming down her face, to ask him – yet again – what he is doing back in Morecambe.
While Andy remains adamant that he doesn’t have an ulterior motive other than spending time with Lisa and their children, as a police officer, Lisa is skilled at knowing when something is amiss.
Is she right to question why he is back or should she have more faith in him?
Has Stephen Marshbrook’s killer been found?
Just a few minutes into series two, Stephen is shot point blank at his own front door in front of his youngest son, Oliver.
The shooter doesn’t hide his face, nor does he conceal the black, two-headed bird tattoo on his right wrist.
In the final moments of episode five, Lisa and her colleague Karen Hobson (Erin Shanagher) are called into a police station in Manchester after a man is apprehended.
As they enter the room, they notice that the man has the tattoo on his wrist, just as Oliver described.
The man appears to look similar to the fake postman who murdered Stephen. So is this the man they’ve been looking for, and if so, was he working alone or as part of a larger plot?
The Bay returns next Wednesday at 9pm and is available to watch on ITV Player.
