John Gosden’s Mishriff gets up late to win the £14m Saudi Cup under 21-year-old jockey David Egan

MISHRIFF stayed on strongly to bag John Gosden and 21-year-old jockey David Egan a monster payday in the Saudi Cup.

The top-class four-year-old collared the favourite Charlatan in the shadows of the post to land the world’s richest race.

Charlatan and Knicks Go – two of the best dirt horses in the world – shipped over from the USA in what was expected to be an all-American showdown.

But Knicks Go checked out early in the straight and it was left to Mishriff, last year’s French Derby winner, to challenge runaway leader Charlatan.

And he was given a peach of a ride by young jockey Egan who lifted him ahead in the dying strides – and was greeted by his jubilant dad and fellow jockey John after the race.

In winning the 1m1f feature, Mishriff banked £7.3m for his connections, with Egan’s cut of the pay cheque a shade under £750k – not bad for two minutes work.

Egan said: “It’s amazing. The Saudi Cup is the richest race in the world.

“I’ve got so many people to thank, but Mishriff most of all, he’s the champion.

“It is so special to have my dad here. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be where I am today. This one’s for him.”

Gosden, watching on from his Newmarket base, said: “What a brave horse. He had to have a lot of courage.

“David rode a positive race and he basically outstayed the American horses in the end.

“He got stuck in horrible, bottomless ground at Ascot last time, otherwise he has a superb record.

“I would have loved to have been there, but I didn’t fancy being put in a hotel and the bottom of Heathrow runway for 10 days when I got back!”
