Nicola Coughlan has revealed a huge Easter Egg from the very first episode of Bridgerton.

The 34-year-old actress dropped a huge bombshell about Penelope Featherington’s true identity which was hidden in plain sight right there in the opening few minutes of the Netflix period drama.

Wondering if anyone has caught on, she tweeted over the weekend: ‘Ok I’m just curious, has anyone spotted the massive Easter Egg about Penelope in the very first scene of Bridgerton?’

Although some people were suitably baffled, plenty of other fans cottoned on right away, and Nicola only waited a few minutes before the big reveal.

Quoting a follower’s correct answer, she added: ‘When I filmed Penelope’s first scene I chose a prop, a massive feather that looked a lot like: The quill’.

As anyone who’s watched the show or read the books knows, the quill is a big hint about Penelope’s true identity as Lady Whistledown – the scandalous column mastermind.

The show’s bosses didn’t even try to hide the prop, as there’s even a close-up of Nicola’s character holding the huge feather.

It’s also not the only hidden detail in the programme though, with the team dropping in plenty of Easter Eggs throughout the first series.

Some of them even lay groundwork for the season two, which will be based on The Viscount Who Loved Me – the second in Julia Quinn’s eight-part book series – as Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) tries to find himself a wife.

His love interest Kate Sharma – Sheffield in the book – will be played by Sex Education’s Simone Ashley.

Without giving too much away, bees feature heavily for Anthony, so seeing them dotted all over the first season is a great treat for fans.

As well as fashion accessories, there are also actual bees, with the most telling being at the end of the whole series when the animal lands on Daphne and Simon’s windowsill.

That definitely sounds like a good excuse for another binge to see what we missed!
