Line Of Duty’s Jed Mercurio has spoken about the future of the hit drama, hinting that more episodes will be on the way after series six.

The show is returning to BBC next month, and now creator Jed has suggested that it will continue beyond the upcoming series.

Jed also spoke about Bodyguard, saying there was the possibility of the Keeley Hawes and Richard Madden-led drama returning at some point.

Speaking about Line of Duty, Jed said: ‘What I do know is that season six proves there is much more ground for us still to cover and then in terms of other projects… I really want to carry on with Line of Duty as I think it still got some ground to cover.’

Talking on the Out To Lunch Podcast, Jed added: ‘I am in a fortunate position as a writer. To dream of getting to the point where people watch your work in such larger numbers and you get a little bit of name recognition as well.

‘In terms of other projects, I think that I learned a lot from the success of Bodyguard. It really was very heartening to see the way in which an audience would come to something that was completely fresh and original. So much content is an adaptation of something that was a book or a film, but Bodyguard was an original concept.’

Political-thriller Bodyguard focused on a police sergeant suffering from PTSD, who is assigned as the principal protection officer for the Home Secretary.

Jed added: ‘The fact that we hit the ground running and people really go into the characters and stories made a huge impact I think on what my ambition for doing more original series.

‘I would love to do something within the next couple of years, if it isn’t Bodyguard 2 then it is something on the same scale as that.’

Meanwhile, Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston will be back in the latest episodes of the smash-hit thriller Line of Duty in March.

The show announced the news of its return via an AC-12 memo from Superintendent Hastings (Dunbar) in his classic brash tone to the rest of the staff, confirming the series will be extended to add an extra episode.

Fans don’t have long to wait until new episodes arrive, and until then they have an incredible video of Vicky, Adrian and Martin dancing to keep them occupied.

Line Of Duty season 6 has yet to be given a release date. Previous series can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
