Canelo Alvarez Fires Back at Critics- ‘I Don’t Care’

Canelo Alvarez Silences fans

Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez lashed out at his critics ahead of his title defense against Avni Yildirim. The pound-for-pound star did not mince his words when talking about the recent criticism that was thrown his way.

Alvarez has had to answer a few questions about his choice of opponents for his next fight. Critics have pointed out the vast difference in ability and ranking. However, the champion is having none of it.

Alvarez spoke to Boxing Scene and lashed out at those questioning his choice of opponent. He said, “I don’t have to give any explanation [for fighting Yildirim] I really don’t have to give any explanation because they’re never gonna be happy with anything.”

This comment showed his dismay at the situation. He then explained why he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. “I just fought #1 at 168 pounds [Smith], and they’re not happy with that, either. So, I have nothing to say and nothing to explain. I don’t care,” said Alvarez.

Even with the fight against Callum Smith, Alvarez received criticism for giving the Englishman the fight on 4-weeks’ notice. Therefore, the Mexican has no escape from the critics.

Is the criticism of Canelo Alvarez justified?

Champions in boxing are often accused of avoiding fights or picking their opponents. Floyd Mayweather was one of the best examples of this.

More recently, fighters like Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. have found themselves at the receiving end of criticism for not fighting each other. However, in Alvarez’s case, it was not justified.

The only reason he took the fight against low-profile Yildirim is that the Turk is the mandatory for the WBC belt. Moreover, Alvarez even took the fight less than 12-weeks from his last fight.

The reason for this is, he wants to make the other unification bouts possible in a bid to become the undisputed champion. Therefore, Alvarez is working towards making the big fights in the sport. Thus, it is no surprise he has lashed out at his critics.

What do you make of these comments from Canelo Alvarez? Do you think he is being criticized unfairly?
