Frasier fans are concerned over the prospect of David Hyde Pierce not returning as psychiatrist Niles Crane in the reboot starring Kelsey Grammer.

It was recently announced that sitcom Frasier is set to make a return, with Kelsey reprising his role as Seattle-based psychiatrist Frasier Crane.

It’s been 17 years since Frasier last aired, with the TV show lasting from 1993 until 2004.

In a statement, Kelsey said: ‘Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world.

‘I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane.’

However, the announcement of Frasier’s return failed to mention whether Kelsey will be joined by his co-stars, including David as Frasier’s brother Niles, Jane Leeves as physiotherapist Daphne Moon and Peri Gilpin as radio show producer Roz Doyle.

While some people are excited about Frasier coming back with new material, others said that in their opinion, it won’t measure up without its other stars, singling out David as Niles in particular.

‘Frasier is one of my favourite TV shows ever but no Niles/ David Hyde Pierce? Who the hell pitched that mess?’ one person tweeted.

‘No David Hyde Pierce in the frasier reboot? Automatically makes it a flop sorry,’ another stated.

Someone else remarked: ‘The only way I will accept this Frasier reboot not having David Hyde Pierce is if there is a second show called ‘Niles’. Which will, of course, be substantially better.’

‘Frasier remains my favourite show of all time and will likely never be surpassed. The revival has my attention but… you can’t do it properly without David Hyde Pierce. Niles was everything,’ another person wrote.

Another fan said that they were having ‘trouble imagining’ how the reboot could ‘be any good without John Mahoney’, who played Frasier and Niles’ father, Martin Crane, and died in 2018 at the age of 77.

‘The absolute best thing about the series,’ they added.

Someone else admitted they felt concerned about the idea of a reboot in general, tweeting: ‘I love Frasier, but it also now looks as mannered and stagey as a restoration comedy. I worry that a reboot will be either horribly dated or horribly updated.’

Frasier’s first appearance on screen came in 1984, when the character was introduced in an episode of Cheers.

Before starring in his eponymous TV show, Kelsey reprised the role in a few TV specials and American sitcom Wings.

The final episode of Frasier saw him leave Seattle for Chicago to be with his girlfriend Charlotte, played by Laura Linney.

Frasier is available to watch for a fee on Amazon Prime Video.
