Phillip Schofield has poked fun at the drama surrounding Dancing On Ice 2021, as a spate of injured stars quitting has led fans to question whether it could be cancelled.

Last week, Dancing On Ice took a one-week hiatus after several contestants were forced to back out of the competition due to injuries and positive Covid-19 tests.

The most recent competitor to drop out of the running is Jason Donovan, after he failed to recover from a back injury he had sustained.

The ITV show is due to make its highly-anticipated return this Sunday, with Phillip and Holly Willoughby returning to co-present the programme.

On today’s edition of This Morning, Phillip and Holly questioned whether it will actually go ahead in a mocking exchange.

After Holly said that tomorrow’s talk show will include a segment about Dancing On Ice with Rebekah Vardy and Faye Brookes, Phillip sarcastically asked: ‘Are we on this weekend?’

Holly then jokingly replied: ‘I think we might be… at the moment’, as Phillip said, ‘That’s nice.’

As we’ve come to learn with this year’s series of Dancing On Ice, we have to take each day as it comes!

In addition to Jason, others stars to have recently quit include Emmerdale’s Joe-Warren Plant, who tested positive for coronavirus; reality star Billie Faiers, who suffered a head injury; and professional skater Hamish Gaman, who snapped a tendon in his hand.

Rapper Lady Leshurr, who is one of five celebrities still in the show, recently speculated on why the programme has been so disaster-struck.

Speaking to MailOnline about Jason’s exit, she said: ‘I can’t believe that, I’m gutted. I really loved [Jason], everybody loved him. It’s the 13th series and you know what they say, it’s an unlucky number.

‘I didn’t think there would be any injuries. I came into this just straight in, I didn’t think about any repercussions. I twisted my knee and that’s currently how I am.’

The other contestants also still in the competition are Rebekah, Faye, Colin Jackson CBE and Sonny Jay.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and Dancing On Ice is due to return this Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
