Ronald Pickup dead: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel star dies aged 80 after long illness

Ronald Pickup, star of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, has died at the age of 80 after a long illness, his agent said today.

It was confirmed the actor died on Wednesday, with his agent saying: ‘Ronald Pickup actor aged 80 passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness surrounded by his wife and family.

‘He will be deeply missed.’

Ronald was perhaps best known for playing the part of Norman Cousins in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel alongside the likes of Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith and Bill Night.

He also starred in Darkest Hour as Neville Chamberlain, as well as 1986 drama The Mission.

Ronald had a long and successful career, working in television and film since the mid-60s.

His career began in theatre. The actor trained at RADA before joining Olivier’s National Theatre Company at the Old Vic.

In his later career, Ronald was also known for his performance as the Archbishop of Canterbury in Netflix hit The Crown.

Ronald is survived by his wife Lans Traverse, and children, Rachel Pickup and Simon Pickup.
