Bake Off’s Sue Perkins recalls Iain Watters’ wild baked Alaska meltdown: ‘He really lost it’

Sue Perkins has recalled Iain Watters’ infamous Great British Bake Off meltdown over his doomed baked Alaska.

In case you need a little reminder of the most iconic moment in the tent, the season five cast were tasked with whipping up the dessert on the hottest day of the year.

However, things hit a snag when Diana Beard took Iain’s offering out of a shared freezer to make some room for her own creation – and accidentally left it out for a minute.

Iain returned to find his ice cream had melted and furiously threw it into a nearby bin – a moment which became front page news the next day.

The former GBBO host appeared on the Off Menu podcast where she reflected on the scenes, revealing the contestant ‘really lost it’ in unaired scenes.

‘I had to talk to him. Yeah, he was effing and jeffing. There’s a lot of effing and jeffing which was the first time we’ve had that on camera in Bake Off,’ she told hosts Ed Gamble and James Acaster.

‘Obviously there’s a lot of it going on backstage, mainly because I’m just foul of mouth but normally it’s very mellow, as you know. He really lost it.’

‘And in that moment I was with him, it was life and death, but then slowly this creeping contextualisation of just… I’m with a man in a tent, whose ice cream has melted. This is… Meanwhile in Syria…,’ Sue laughed.

‘I had to take him out, and we had to have a little chat, be nice guy, and just say, “Come on, let’s bring some perspective to this. Maybe, maybe not, somebody open the fridge door, it might have affected the temperature.”

‘But I have to say the aplomb with which he just got the foot on the pedal of the pedal bin. It was like something out of Thelma and Louise, when you see that close up of it going down.

Sue also suggested bosses should turn the mistake into a film – which we would totally watch.

Ahead of that blockbuster, some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry are gearing up to set foot in the tent for the official Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer 2021 – including Jade Thirlwall and James McAvoy.

The brand new series is set to air across five episodes in the spring and will see 20 celebrities doing their best to impress judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.

Each instalment will see four stars battle it out over the Signature, the Technical and the Showstopper in a bid to be crowned Star Baker.

And we can’t wait to see which one of them follows in Iain’s footsteps.

Celebrity Bake Off will air in the spring on Channel 4.
