Married At First Sight Australia’s Mike Gunner claims he was talked into making ‘stab at gender’ during reunion special
Married At First Sight Australia’s Mike Gunner has claimed he was coerced into saying ‘men handle pressure better than women’ during the reunion special.
The 45-year-old electrician came under fire from viewers on last night’s reunion finale when he was quizzed by relationship expert Mel Schilling, who asked why the women fought more than the men.
But speaking now the episode has aired, Mike said him stepping in was done by the producers in the editing room, and that he didn’t mean to take a ‘stab at gender’.
‘Mel turned to me and said “what do you think Mike?” and these were my words, I said “I don’t think I want to weigh in on this. I’m just going to stay out of this one,”’ he told OK! Magazine.
‘She went “no no, come on, what’s your opinion?” and I said exactly this “is it possible that in a situation like this, groups of men handle the pressure better than groups of women?”
‘Now they cut that up to make it out to sound like I said “men handle pressure better than women”, and that just sounded like a real stab at gender and that really annoyed me.’
‘I watched it back and thought well that’s really not how it happened,’ he continued. ‘It sounded like I just interjected and that really p***ed me off.
‘So that’s a regret. I should’ve literally just have said nothing.’
The series, which aired in Australia back in 2019, has been airing across the past month on E4 – becoming the must-watch TV series during the latest leg of lockdown.
For the show’s duration, Mike was paired up with Heidi Latcham, and despite some clashes over how they spoke to each other, they left the series as a couple, saying their final vows to try and make it work.
However, they weren’t to be, and after moving in together after filming ended, they decided it wasn’t working out and parted ways.
Mike is now dating a woman named Sonja Marcelline, who he met on the dating app Bumble, and said things were going ‘really well’ with his new girlfriend.
Married At First Sight Australia is available on Channel 4 on Demand.
