BBC Breakfast weather reporter Matt Taylor has stepped in to defend his co-host Naga Munchetty after a viewer said he’d ‘drawn the short straw’ by working with her.

It comes after Naga and her co-presenter Charlie Stayt came under fire following their appearance on last weekend’s Saturday Kitchen.

Viewers said they found the ‘behaviour and comments of the guests ‘inappropriate’ and that they were ‘rude’ to presenter Matt Tebbutt.

Despite not naming the ‘rude’ guests in its statement, the only two people invited into the studio on to Saturday’s instalment was Naga and Charlie.

Amid the backlash, Matt has stood up for his pal after one viewer hit out on Twitter.

As reported by the Daily Express, in a tweet, which has since been deleted, the viewer said: ‘@MetMattTaylor See you’ve drawn the short straw and on this morning with @TVNaga01.

‘Hope she’s kind to you but if not give as good as you get.’

The meteorologist was quick to defend Naga as he told them he ‘loved working’ with her.

‘We may have a little bit of banter on air,’ he replied. ‘But she is honestly the loveliest of people and hugely respects what I do. Have a good weekend.”

‘Love ya matey xx,’ Naga tweeted back.

During last weekend’s instalment of the Saturday Kitchen, Matt and chef Yotam Ottolenghi invited Naga and Charlie to the show to sample their food and to talk about their work and latest projects.

However, Matt didn’t manage to ask many questions at all, because the duo appeared to take over hosting duties.

At the time, viewers took to social media to air their frustration and the show even started trending on Twitter with the hashtag ‘Poor Matt’.

Their appearance also sparked more than 100 complaints to the BBC from unhappy viewers.

Releasing a statement to its website, the broadcaster’s internal regulator addressed the complaints explaining to viewers they ‘appreciate the feedback’.

‘Saturday Kitchen Live’s format allows for an informal chatty style and the guests are encouraged to feel relaxed in the studio,’ the statement began.

‘Some viewers found the behaviour and comments of the guests this week to be inappropriate and that they were rude to presenter Matt. We appreciate the feedback and we shared it with the Saturday Kitchen team.’

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
