Captain Sir Tom Moore funeral live – Heroic war veteran to get ‘spectacular’ send off today with tributes around country

CAPTAIN Sir Tom Moore will be given a “spectacular” send off when his funeral takes place today.

Although coronavirus restrictions mean his family are only able to hold a small family funeral, there are numerous events taking place to make his send-off something really special.

Churches up and down the country will ring their bells at midday in tribute to Captain Sir Tom, who passed away earlier this month aged 100 after contracting coronavirus.

The heroic war veteran touched the nation by raising £38.9million for NHS staff struggling with the Covid pandemic.

Troops from the Yorkshire Regiment, of which he was made an Honorary Colonel last August, will carry his coffin into crematorium later today before a firing party of 14 each fires three rounds in unison.

A bugler will then sound The Last Post at the end of the private service, which Captain Sir Tom’s daughter, 52, said will be “quite spectacular”.

“There’s just going to be the eight of us under full Covid restrictions, we will honour him the best way we possibly can,” she said.

Sir Tom asked that My Way by Frank Sinatra is played at his funeral and that his epitaph reads ‘I told you I was old’, in reference to comedian Spike Milligan’s famous epitaph ‘I told you I was ill’.
