**The following article contains major spoilers for episode two of Bloodlands**

One of the most gripping crime dramas of the year so far returned for its second instalment on Sunday, with James Nesbitt’s DCI Tom Brannick continuing his search for justice in Bloodlands.

The most shocking moment of the series so far played out during the episode, with Tom committing a murder that could blow the whole show wide open.

Elsewhere, after episode one saw the discovery of three bodies buried on a remote island, the search for serial killer Goliath intensified, as Tom looked to uncover more truth about the death of his wife 20 years previously.

We learned that the bodies were ‘coldblooded executions’, one of which had an owl pendant buried alongside it – the same style that Tom gave to his daughter in episode one.

Frustrations built after Tom loses control of the crime scene to the ICLVR, with forensics initially unable to identify the bodies.

With tensions escalating on the streets of Belfast, and the case threatening ‘all out war’, the second episode saw Tom and DS Niamh McGovern go digging into the past.

These are six questions we have after episode two.

Is Tom really Goliath?

In shocking scenes, Tom killed Adam Corry (Ian McElhinney) out on the island, after bringing him to his brother’s grave.

It came after Adam accused Tom of being the killer and saying his brother was having an affair with Tom’s wife, and that they loved each other.

Could Tom really be the serial killer Goliath? Or did he shoot Adam after he accused his wife of having an affair?

It’s the biggest moment so far, and one that will have huge ramifications for the rest of series.

Should we be suspicious of DCS Jackie Twomey?

Lorcan Cranitch’s DCS Jackie Twomey continued to deflect and keep Tom from pursuing Goliath earlier in the episode.

Is he really trying to protect peace in Northern Ireland? Is he attempting to keep Tom from personal demons surrounding the death of his wife? Or are there darker forces at work?

In more mysterious scenes, we see Jackie drive to a secluded caravan, picking up a burner phone and calling Siobhan – the wife of one of the victims.

We then see the pair meet up in secret, suggesting the pair have a history we’re yet to uncover.

‘Siobhan, we need to be careful,’ he says, proving that the pair are plotting together. What could they be up to?

Who is the woman seen with Pat Keenan?

The team found that former IRA man Pat Keenan was buying viagra tablets, which explained the loss of vision he was experiencing in episode one. Pat refuses to cooperate with police, and the team look into his actions ahead of his kidnapping after infiltrating records on his phone.

CCTV showed images of him with a woman in the leadup to his kidnapping, one with short brown hair.

With Pat refusing to give information to the police, her identity remains a mystery, but she could be key to the case.

Did Adam Corry know more than was letting on?

Before Adam’s death, Tom and Niamh paid a visit to him following the discovery of his brother’s remains on the island.

Telling Tom and Niamh ominously that he is going to ‘find out’ what really happened, promising: ‘It’s all gonna come out’.

Tom also spots a pot of tea for two on the side of the kitchen, which is still hot, and looks suspicious. Adam claims that it was the ICLVR who came to see him earlier, but could it be someone else that paid him a visit? Could it be someone with closer ties to the case?

It’s later revealed that Adam called the harbourmaster about Goliath four months previously, and he’s looking into the identity of the killer with another as-yet-unidentified person.

Was there something he knew that we still don’t, and will Tom possibly find it hidden in the notebooks stacked away in his house?

What really happened to Emma?

In episode one, we learned that Tom is still looking for the truth about his wife 20 years after she was ‘murdered’ by Goliath.

However, after the three bodies on the island are all identified as male – at least as far as we know – more questions emerged about what really happened to her.

In one scene between Naimh and Michael Smiley’s Dinger, we learn that Emma ‘wasn’t just Tom’s wife’, but had the connections in the intelligence services and was able to ‘manipulate her own disappearance’.

Could she still be alive, and living under a new identity?

Will Pat Keenan go after Tom’s family again?

Tom’s daughter was grabbed in distressing scenes after attending a rugby match with her dad and teacher Tori Matthews – whose father was one of the victims discovered on the island.

‘Threaten my family and I’ll threaten yours,’ a man told Izzy, before dumping her out the road. Pat then called Tom to let him know he was the person responsible. Will the case continue to put Tom’s family at risk?

Bloodlands continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
