Mike Tomlin Puzzled with Lack of Opportunities at HC for Eric Bieniemy

After a career in the NFL as a running back, Eric Bieniemy began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Colorado Boulder. After a short stint with UCLA, Bieniemy was appointed as running backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings in 2006.

Seven years later, he assumed the same position as part of Andy Reid’s coaching staff for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018. Without a shadow of a doubt, Bieniemy has helped transform the AFC West franchise into consistent Super Bowl contenders.

He was reportedly being tipped to take over as head coach this year with several vacant positions up for grabs. But unfortunately, is yet to receive an offer.

While speaking to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin gave an interesting take on Eric Bieniemy’s puzzling situation in the NFL.

He said, “Bieniemy is a real head-scratcher for me. Every offensive coordinator Andy Reid has had in the last 20 years got a head job. One of those guys, Brad Childress, hired me in Minnesota in 2006. Now, Andy has the best offense he’s ever had and [Bieniemy] can’t get a job?”

“I don’t have an answer for you as to how to make it better. The optimist in me says things will get better, but there’s been no evidence in the recent cycles to back that up. Without evidence, all we have is hope. We just haven’t been able to move the needle,” Tomlin said in the interview.

The likes of Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, New York Jets, and even Detroit Lions were without head coaches this offseason. But with all those positions filled up, Bieniemy might have to wait a little longer to take up a head coach role. One can’t help but think this might be a blessing in disguise for the Chiefs.
