Filmmaker Chloé Zhao made history at the Golden Globes this year, as she became the second ever female to win the award for best director.

On Sunday night the Golden Globes aired virtually, with British stars among those winning big, including The Crown’s Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor.

However, it was the best director category that saw history made as Zhao not only became the first ever Asian filmmaker to bag the award for her film Nomadland, but the second female to do so too.

The first female to win best director at the Golden Globes was Barbara Streisand who won the accolade almost four decades ago in 1984 for her movie Yentl.

This year saw a Golden Globes first as three women were nominated in the best director category, with Zhao joining Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Regina King (One Night In Miami…).

Until 2021, only five women had even been nominated in the category.

Naturally, fans and stars alike were seen celebrating Zhao’s historic win on social media, with Streisand leading the praise, as she tweeted: ‘It’s about time! Congratulations Chloé! Well deserved!’

Sunnyside star Kiran Deol posted: ‘Chloe Zhao sitting there alone with her green mug no fancy lighting casually breaking director ceilings TAKES THE NIGHT HONEY.’

Riverdale star Cami Mendes (who plays Veronica Lodge in The CW series) shared Zhao’s win to her Instagram story and wrote: ‘To add some context the first woman the first woman that won best director was Barbara Streisand for Yentl which was released in 1983.’

Accepting her award, a tearful Zhao said: ‘I especially want to thank the nomads who shared their stories with us.’

She shared a quote from nomad Bob Wells that said: ‘Compassion is a breakdown of all barriers between us, a heart-to-heart bonding. Your pain is my pain. It’s mingled and shared between us.’

‘This is why I fell in love with making movies and telling stories,’ Zhao said. ‘Because it gives us a chance to laugh and cry together, and a chance to learn from each other and have more compassion for each other.’

She continued: ‘Nomadland at its core for me is a pilgrimage through grief and healing. So for everyone who has gone through this difficult and beautiful journey at some point in their lives, this is for you. We don’t say goodbye, we say, “See you down the road.”‘

Other winners on the night included Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Ruffalo, The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy and Chadwick Boseman, who received a posthumous best actor award for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
