The Golden Globes 2021 audience was made up of key workers who have been on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler paid tribute to the ‘smoking hot’ first responders on Sunday night who were watching from socially distanced tables.

Comedy icons Tina and Amy fronted the awards for the fourth time, but due to the pandemic they appeared from opposite coasts, with Amy stationed at the Beverley Hills Hilton in LA, and Tina based at the Rainbow Room in New York City.

Addressing the key workers in New York, Tina said: ‘Tonight our audience is made up of smoking hot first responders and #EssentialWorkers.

She went on: ‘We are so grateful for the work that you do and that you’re here so that the celebrities can stay safe.’

The pair also quipped that the Golden Globes are typically ‘messy’ so the audience should basically ‘do whatever you want’ as the celebs normally do.

The presenters also took a moment to mock the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Tina stated: ‘We all know award shows are stupid.’

Amy joked: ‘They’re all a scam invented by Big Red Carpet’ as Tina continued: ‘The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important. And there are no Black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press.’

She then stressed: ‘I realise HFPA, maybe you guys didn’t get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald’s. But, you’ve got to change that, so here’s to changing it.’

As well as distanced hosts and a cancelled red carpet, nominees tuned in and accepted their awards from home, with some stars such as Jeff Daniels and John Boyega opting for casual wear.

It was a big night for the British as Emma Corrin, Daniel Kaluuya and Sacha Baron Cohen bagged major prizes.
