“So Disappointed”: Complications Compel Amanda Anisimova Another Withdrawal in 2021

American Amanda Anisimova during her third round at the French Open 2020World No.32 Amanda Anisimova has had a tough start to the 2021 season. Anisimova’s misfortune began when she contracted coronavirus before the start of the WTA Abu Dhabi in January, which forced her to withdraw from the tournament.

To make matter worse, Anisimova couldn’t return a negative test before boarding the flight to Melbourne and unfortunately had to miss the 2021 Australian Open.

Another setback for Amanda Anisimova

To gain match practice, Anisimova signed up for an ITF event in Colorado but conceded a walkover in her second-round match against Claire Liu.

Despite all the troubles, Anisimova decided to compete at the WTA Qatar Open. However, she has pulled out of the WTA 500 event at the last moment because of an ankle injury.

Through a Twitter post, the 19-year-old mentioned having fallen down a couple of days ago which hurt her ankle. Anisimova wrote about being utterly disappointed in having missed another tournament in the 2021 season.

“It’s hard for me to share this news but a couple days ago I fell and hurt my ankle. It was an accident and not tennis related. Thankfully it’s not too bad. I am so disappointed to be missing yet another tournament. The start to the year has not been easy, but I am so impatient to get back on the court. I am planning on playing in Dubai next,” announced Anisimova.

Having just played a single match that too in an ITF event during the first two months, Anisimova acknowledged being impatient to get back on the court.

The 2019 French Open semifinalist is aiming to play at the WTA Dubai Championships, which starts next week. Top players including defending champion Simona Halep, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and many others will headline the Dubai Open.

After a tumultuous start to the season, here’s wishing Anisimova a speedy recovery!
