This Morning’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield issued a desperate plea to a mother who told them that she’s refusing to go to her son’s wedding because she doesn’t feel involved in the event.

On today’s show, Holly, Phillip, and agony aunt Deidre Sanders welcomed calls from viewers to talk about their family feuds, in light of the ‘tension’ between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and other members of the royal family.

One caller, Mandy, felt so hurt to not have a bigger role in her son’s wedding that she doesn’t want to attend at all.

Mandy said that her son and his partner became engaged in 2019, at which point she and the rest of the family were ‘very close’ and ‘over the moon’ about the couple embarking on the next chapter of their lives.

However, when it came to wedding planning, she said she and her side of the family ‘weren’t involved in any of it’.

Explaining that the wedding had to be postponed a few times due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mandy stated: ‘I just want to know if I’m being unreasonable that I’m really not going to the wedding,’ leaving Holly, Phillip and Deidre looking utterly shocked.

Mandy outlined how upset she felt over the fact that none of her daughters were made bridesmaids, nor was she invited to the wedding dress fitting.

‘That doesn’t sound unreasonable to me,’ Phillip said, after finding out that the bride was only accompanied by her mother for her wedding dress fitting.

‘Please rethink this. Please please rethink this. I think you will regret it,’ Deidre added.

Holly emphasised that Mandy needs to understand that the wedding is a ‘personal choice for the bride and groom’, even though it is a ‘family occasion’.

‘Ultimately I guess it’s about them and what they want,’ Holly said.

‘I know it can be difficult sometimes to sit back and let those decisions happen around you but I guess your job as mother of the groom is just to be there and give them as much love as you possibly can and support them.’

Phillip warned that he thinks Mandy will ‘massively, massively regret’ her decision ‘because you’re going to end up estranged from your son’.

‘The bottom line Mandy is it is their day and they should be able to do what they want. It’s not about what you want, it’s not your day,’ he added.

‘If you don’t row back from this, you’re the one that’s going to miss out.’

In the end, Mandy said that she understood and agreed with what the presenters were saying, replying: ‘I know. I totally agree, but I just feel hurt.’

Holly left her with a message of support, telling her: ‘Alright Mandy, you’ve got this. You can do it.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
