Kate Garraway is set to front a documentary for ITV charting a difficult year for her family after her husband was hospitalised with Covid-19.

Derek Draper, who has been married to Kate since 2005, has been in hospital since March 2020 after testing positive for coronavirus.

ITV announced on Thursday that the film will see the Good Morning Britain host ‘open up about the challenging year for her family’.

Due to the changing guidelines as the pandemic continues, the TV star has been unable to see her husband since before Christmas.

Derek is now free of Covid-19 but the virus has wreaked havoc on his body, leaving holes in his heart and lungs. The former political lobbyist has emerged from his deep coma but is in a minimal state of consciousness.

The mum-of-two recently reflected on what she has learned over the past year, recalling the kindness of strangers at such a difficult time.

She told Hello magazine: ‘In the darkest of times you can find goodness and love just when you need it most and helping each other is the only way we will get through this grimmest of times.’

Kate, who shares son Billy, 11, and 14-year-old daughter Darcey with Derek, added: ‘I’ve learnt about the kindness of strangers. It has been the toughest of times for me and my family, as it has for so many others and the good wishes and sympathy from viewers and listeners has really helped.’

Other programmes set for ITV later this year include a new Ross Kemp documentary, which sees the actor search for Britain’s ‘tiger kings’, and the return of Love Island.
