Bethenny Frankel apologises for Meghan Markle tweet after interview: ‘It must feel suffocating and powerless’
Bethenny Frankel has apologised for mocking Meghan Markle, following her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The 50-year-old attracted backlash for tweeting ‘cry me a river’ when speaking about the former Suits actress ahead of the broadcast of her and husband Prince Harry’s interview last night in the States.
A fan tweeted a slew of headlines about Palace staff allegedly making ‘catty comments’ about Meghan and not approving of her celebrity status, writing: ‘Yeah cause the staff were so respectful of her.’
Bethenny tweeted: ‘Cry me a river… the plight of being a game show host, fairly unknown actress, to suffering in a palace, w tiaras & 7 figure weddings for TWO WHOLE YEARS to being a household name w @Oprah on speed dial, fetching 7 m for interviews, hundreds of millions in media deals.’
She continued: ‘I [100] give Harry a break. This isn’t the way to generate less press & cannot be filed under the guise of wanting privacy to prevent a repeat of previous events.
‘I chose reality tv, to work towards making $, to be scrutinized & criticized.I took the trappings & the beatings along with it. It’s a rose w petals & thorns. People beg to enter the often toxic institution I signed up for. That WAS the life I chose. You can’t play stupid & smart.’
People called out the Real Housewives of New York City star, asking: ‘So racism and misogyny don’t matter to you?’
One person responded: ‘Bethenny, with all due respect, we literally watched you become successful and rich on TV. Yet you always seemed to have something to cry about every episode. Maybe this is the wrong angle for you to take’, while another person called the post ‘unnecessarily cruel’.
Selling Sunset star Chrishell Stause also got involved, writing: ‘Not a white housewife comparing her struggle to Meghan’s. A woman of colour joining the Royal Family. It’s the delusion for me.’
However, following the broadcast of the Oprah interview, in which Meghan discussed having suicidal thoughts as a result of the abuse she received, Bethenny apologised for any hurt or offence she caused, although she said the interview was a ‘surprising choice’ during a pandemic.
She wrote: ‘I watched M & H sit down. Emotional distress & racism must feel suffocating & powerless.
‘I’m a polarizing, unfiltered(often to a fault)flawed person w a voice. When I heard of the interview, during a pandemic, it felt like a surprising choice. I’m sorry if it hurt or offended you.’
In the two-hour sit-down interview which aired on CBS in the States last night, Meghan told Oprah that she ‘just didn’t want to be alive any more’ due to the abuse she received after marrying Harry.
The Duchess, who is expecting a baby girl, said she asked ‘the institution’ for help, but claims they refused to let her have psychiatric treatment.
She explained: ‘I thought [suicide] would solve everything for everyone. I went to Human Resources but they said: “There is nothing we can do to help you because you are not a paid member of the institution.” Nothing was ever done.’
Harry and Meghan also alleged that one member of the royal household expressed concern about Archie’s skin tone before he was born, due to Meghan being mixed race, and Harry claimed that his father Prince Charles had stopped taking his calls after the couple announced their intention to step down from royal duties.
The interview will air tonight on ITV at 8pm.
