Jane Moore and Charlene White clashed on Loose Women this afternoon amid a discussion on ‘casual racism’ coming from the Royal Family to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview, the couple revealed that a member of the family ‘expressed concern’ about the skin tone of baby Archie while Meghan was still pregnant.

Talking about the moment on today’s panel, Jane started the conversation and said: ‘Meghan has very much said it’s her truth, or their truth. The question remains whether it’s the truth of the institution. Some of the things said in this interview are very, very serious.’

Going on to add that she felt Harry and Meghan’s claims were ‘vague’ – particularly as they didn’t name the Royal in question, Jane continued: ‘I think everybody watching has got someone from the older generation that sometimes says something that’s very inappropriate or maybe casually racist, not necessarily meaning it to be or understanding it is.’

Jane added that it could have possibly been an enquiry into what the baby will look like, similar to wondering if they had ginger hair like Harry’s.

Charlene, the only Black member of today’s panel, then spoke out and said that even ‘casual’ racism isn’t OK, and added: ‘But that’s not what Meghan has said, she said there were concerns about the colour of their son’s skin. So there’s a difference between… You perhaps would be ok with casual racism.’

Jane then stepped in and insisted that wasn’t what she meant or said.

As the conversation got more heated, panellists Stacey Solomon and Nadia Sawalha were stunned into silence as the pair continued to butt heads – with viewer becoming more annoyed as Jane continued to interrupt Charlene as she discussed her own experiences with racism.

‘They have chosen not to mention the person that had that conversation,’ Charlene said, defending Harry and Meghan. ‘There’s a very, very different reason between enquiring as to the skin colour of a child who is the product of an interracial relationship as to being “concerned.”

‘Having concern about it is something completely different.’

‘Who said it? Why does that matter?’ Charlene later added. ‘The fact that it was said is an indication of what it was that they were going through as an institution.’

As the debate continued to get more heated, Charlene said: ”I just don’t think we are very good at talking about racism. I just don’t think we are, I think there’s a lot of disbelief. It can’t be true, it can’t be true and lots of minorities are the same. When we’re talking about an aggressive woman, I have been there, I have experienced that.’

‘But I get called aggressive all the time, and I’m not Black,’ Jane responded. ‘I’m not saying it’s not true, but women get called you know, it’s something you have to put up with as a woman isn’t.’

After watching the uncomfortable scenes, viewers spoke out in support of Charlene, slamming Jane for not listening and talking over her co-star.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
