Carey Mulligan and Olivia Colman were among the high-profile snubs as the EE Bafta nominations were revealed.

Ahead of the awards, taking place on April 11, Bafta chair Krishnendu Majumdar was joined by Aisling Bea and Susan Wokoma to announce nods for the ceremony.

Carey, who has delighted critics with her role as Cassie in Promising Young Woman, failed to make the list for best actress.

Viola Davis was snubbed in the category, despite getting praised heavily for her turn as Ma Rainey in Netflix hit, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Rocks’ Bukky Bakray, The Forty-Year-Old version star Radha Blank, Pieces of a Woman actress Vanessa Kirby, Nomadland’s Frances McDormand, His House star Wunmi Mosaku and Clemency actress Alfre Woodard will be battling it out in that category.

Promising Young Woman was nominated for best film, but director Emerald Fennell was not included in the shortlist for best director.

Olivia Colman was also left off the nominations list for best supporting actress, following her stint in The Father.

Kosar Ali, of Rocks, has been tipped for the gong, alongside Calm With Horses star Niamh Algar, Borat’s Subsequent Moviefilm actress Maria Bakalova, Judas and the Black Messiah’s Dominique Fishback, Ashley Madekwe from County Lines and Yuh-Jung Youn of Minari.

Fans were unimpressed by the snubs, and flocked to Twitter to have their say on the nominations.

‘The Baftas snubbing Carey Mulligan is as bad as the Oscars snubbing Amy Adams for arrival it’s unacceptable,’ one fumed.

‘Actress is truly the most bizarre part of this year’s #EEBAFTAs,’ another stated. ‘Even ignoring the fact the long-list somehow excluded Sidney Flannigan, Michelle Pfeiffer, Andra Day and Rosamund Pike, how did neither Viola Davis nor Carey Mulligan make the nominations?! Utterly bizarre!’

‘And more importantly Viola Davis – the single best performance by any actor in any size role in 2020,’ a follower said.

‘The Viola Davis and Carey Mulligan erasure wtf,’ a Twitter user commented.

As a follower added: ‘I’m sorry but the fact that Olivia Colman didn’t even get in supporting actress wtf Bafta like that’s another level.’

The awards are set to air on April 11, without a live audience due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking about what viewers can expect from the ceremony, Amanda Berry, chief executive of Bafta, said: ‘The last year has seen the Covid-19 pandemic impact everyone and the film industry is no exception.

‘I would like to thank all those who have supported us and enabled Bafta to continue to celebrate the very best work in film, from our members who embraced the changes we made to the voting process to the distributors for ensuring that many more films were available for online viewing.

‘Film has always held an essential place in our culture but I think we can all agree that it has been even more important during this time.

‘I very much look forward to celebrating the incredible talent of all our nominees across on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April.’

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place on Sunday April 11, 2021.
