Piers Morgan quits Good Morning Britain: Jameela Jamil leads stars calling for Alex Beresford to replace him after Meghan Markle comments
Following the news that Piers Morgan is leaving Good Morning Britain after his comments about Meghan Markle, the stars have been calling for him to be replaced by Alex Beresford.
ITV released a statement confirming that Piers would be stepping down after his comments about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
It said in a statement: ‘Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.’
Jameela Jamil was among the first to comment, joking: ‘OH MY GOD IS IT MY BIRTHDAY AGAIN?! I hope @alexberesfordTV replaces his role. What a gent!’
Martin Lewis added: ‘Just read this. Wow. That was quick.’, while Gary Lineker added: ‘Whether it’s a football manager, a television presenter or any profession for that matter, it’s always sad when someone loses their job. @piersmorgan is excellent at what he does and I’m sure he’ll be back on the telly soon.’
The Vamps’ James McVey joked: ‘Piers Morgan, what a snowflake.’
Shappi Khorsandi tweeted: ‘Maybe bringing down Piers Morgan was what Harry and Meghan had actually set out to do from the start.’
George Galloway commented: ‘Dear @piersmorgan You told me once “a sacking is an opportunity”. It turned out that way for me and I hope it will for you. In fact I’m sure it will. You’re a class-act and Box-Office too. Best of luck chum.’
Sharon Osbourne supported Piers, adding: ‘@piersmorgan I am with you. I stand by you. People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth.’
The announcement that Piers was leaving the show came after he received 41,000 complaints to Ofcom regarding comments he had made about Meghan Markle.
During the interview, Meghan claimed that a senior member of the Royal family ‘expressed concern’ over baby Archie’s skin colour before he was born and said that the pressure of being in the family left her suicidal.
Discussing the revelations, Piers said that he ‘didn’t believe a word that she said’.
Piers also stormed off the set of GMB after co-star Alex Beresford pulled him up on his comments.
The weather reporter defended Harry and Meghan, and called Piers out for his continued condemnation of the Royal couple.
