Loose Women faced 324 Ofcom complaints in an episode where Jane Moore appeared to defend ‘casual racism’ to Charlene White.

On Monday, Jane sparked an argument around Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which the Duchess claimed a senior member of the Royal family ‘expressed concern’ about the skin tone of baby Archie while she was pregnant with him.

Speaking about the revelation, Jane said she needed further context and that Meghan’s comments were ‘too vague’, particularly as she and Prince Harry refused to name the person involved as it would be ‘too damaging’.

‘I think everybody watching has got someone from the older generation that sometimes says something that’s very inappropriate or maybe casually racist, not necessarily meaning it to be or understanding it is,’ Jane told the panel.

She added it could have possibly been an enquiry into what the baby will look like, similar to wondering if they had ginger hair like Harry’s.

Charlene, the only Black member of today’s panel, then spoke out and said that even ‘casual’ racism wasn’t OK, and added: ‘But that’s not what Meghan has said, she said there were concerns about the colour of their son’s skin. So there’s a difference between… You perhaps would be ok with casual racism.’

Jane insisted that she wasn’t OK with casual racism but was trying to demonstrate a point.

‘They have chosen not to mention the person that had that conversation,’ Charlene said, defending Harry and Meghan. ‘There’s a very, very different reason between enquiring as to the skin colour of a child who is the product of an interracial relationship as to being “concerned.”

‘Having concern about it is something completely different.’

Over the course of the next 10 minutes, the pair were then seen speaking over each other as they continued the debate, with Nadia Sawalha and Stacey Solomon stuck in the middle.

‘Who said it? Why does that matter?’ Charlene later added. ‘The fact that it was said is an indication of what it was that they were going through as an institution.’

Viewers were quick to speak out about the argument, with most siding with Charlene as she was spoken over.

Following Harry and Meghan’s chat, Buckingham Palace have spoken out about the claims, and said in a statement: ‘The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

‘The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

‘Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.’
