If you liked the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coin-op, or Turtles In Time on the SNES, then Shredder’s Revenge is about to make your day.

The glory days of the scrolling beat ‘em-up are long since past but the genre’s not entirely dead, as last year’s excellent Streets Of Rage 4 proved – and now it’s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ turn for a comeback.

There have been dozens of TMNT tie-ins over the years but the only universally loved ones are the old 1989 Konami coin-op and its SNES sequel Turtles In Time. Shredder’s Revenge is a homage to both and looks so authentic it’ll almost bring a tear to your eye.

What’s especially encouraging is that it’s a collaboration between Streets Of Rage 4 publisher and co-developer Dotemu and Flinthook and Mercenary Kings creator Tribute Games, both of which are very talented.

There’s no release date for the game yet but it’s coming to consoles and PC and features a four-player mode where you can play as well… you know who.

Although the animated intro seems to suggest that you might also be able to play as April O’Neil and Splinter as well – and who knows, maybe Shredder and the bad guys too.

The only thing we know for certain though is that the TV theme tune has been re-recorded by no less than Faith No More’s Mike Patton, which is not a sentence we thought we’d be typing today.

Dotemu has begun to specialise in remakes and sequels to old school 2D games, having also made the well-received Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap in 2017.

When we interviewed them a while back they hinted at a third game in a similar style, but it’s not clear whether that’s Shredder’s Revenge or if there’s something else that they’re working on alone.
