Piers Morgan shamelessly gloats as unmissable final Good Morning Britain episode beats BBC Breakfast in ratings for first time ever: ‘My work is done’

Piers Morgan has rejoiced as he bowed out of Good Morning Britain in a blaze of glory, with the ITV show overtaking rival BBC Breakfast’s viewing figures for the first time ever and setting a record in the process.

ITV confirmed Piers had quit Good Morning Britain yesterday after receiving 41,000 Ofcom complaints over his comments regarding Meghan Markle’s mental health.

During his final moments on GMB alongside co-host Susanna Reid, Piers was embroiled in an on-air row with weatherman Alex Beresford over his relentless attacks on the Duchess of Sussex, storming off set in what was undoubtedly, for better or worse, unmissable television – proven by the ratings which show GMB pulled in an audience of 1.3 million viewers on March 9, beating BBC Breakfast’s 1.25 million.

Unsurprisingly, the presenter lapped up the news, declaring his ‘work is done’.

BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker had zero sympathy for his sparring partner as news of his Good Morning Britain departure was confirmed, tweeting: ‘Sorry to hear the news about your departure from GMB @piersmorgan If you’d like to come on the UK’s number 1 breakfast show to talk about it… we could make some space for you in the morning.’

In Piers’ absence, Susanna addressed the nation for the first time this morning where she paid tribute to the ‘disruptive broadcaster’, while looking forward to Good Morning Britain’s future without him.

She said: ‘Now Piers has decided to leave the programme. Some of you may cheer and others will boo. He’s been my presenting partner, Monday to Wednesday, for more than five years.

‘From Brexit to the pandemic, and other issues, he has been a voice for many of you and a voice that many of you have railed against.

‘It is certainly going to be very different but shows go on and so on we go.’

Body language expert Judi James told Metro.co.uk the presenter appeared to show ‘regret’ in her statement, but remained loyal to her TV partner of the past five years.

As it stands, viewers and celebrities are backing Alex to replace Piers and become Susanna’s co-host, while bookmakers – and Lorraine Kelly – have tipped Ben Shephard to take the seat.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
