Piers Morgan walks daughter to school after quitting GMB over Meghan comments
Piers Morgan was all smiles as he marked the first day after his Good Morning Britain exit by walking daughter Elise to school.
The controversial host left GMB on Tuesday, hours after he stormed off during a discussion with Alex Beresford, over his comments concerning Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Oprah interview.
On Monday’s instalment, the 55-year-old discussed the bombshell chat, casting doubt on the Duchess of Sussex’s revelation that she considered suicide at the height of relentless abuse – with the scenes racking up 41,000 Ofcom complaints from viewers.
Ranvir Singh joined Susanna Reid on today’s episode, as Piers spent his first morning off taking his youngest child to school.
The pair were greeted by photographers on their stroll in London, with the former ITV host grinning for the cameras.
Speaking outside his London home, he insisted that his departure from the programme was ‘amicable’, explaining: ‘I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree.
‘I’m just going to take it easy and see how we go.’
Piers may not have got the biggest lie-in as he fired off on Twitter in the early hours of this morning, doubling down on his comments about Meghan.
The Life Stories host sparked an instant backlash when he discussed the bombshell interview, where the Duchess told Oprah that there were times she ‘just didn’t want to be alive anymore’.
She then claimed that she asked ‘the institution’ for help, but was refused psychiatric treatment.
The following day, Piers fumed about the footage on GMB, asking: ‘Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle.
‘I wouldn’t believe it if she read me weather report. The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our Royal family I think is contemptible.’
Taking to the platform just after 6am this morning, he posted: ‘On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview.
‘I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. If you did, OK.
‘Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.’
Alongside this, Piers included a photo of Winston Churchill with the quote: ‘Some people’s idea of free speech is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone says anything back, that is an outrage.’
ITV bosses released a statement on Tuesday evening, announcing he had left the staple series.
‘Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,’ it read.
‘ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.’
It has since been claimed that his departure came after Meghan lodged a complaint with ITV over his words.
According to the Guardian and the Telegraph, his departure came after ‘a formal complaint was lodged with ITV on behalf of the duchess after the broadcast’.
