Tekashi 6ix9ine has found himself at the centre of a lawsuit accusing him of ‘ripping off’ another artist’s song with his track Gooba.

Gooba was the first song Tekashi, 24, dropped following his release from prison last year and it’s now at the centre of controversy, as a producer duo from Texas claims the rapper ‘copied’ their song for the track.

Beat Demons are seeking damages and have filed a suit against Tekashi demanding he pays them the profits he made from Gooba, reports TMZ.

They claim that Gooba was inspired by their track Regular, which was released in 2018 and racked up over 150,000 views.

In comparison, Tekashi’s track Gooba went platinum and has hit over 700million views on YouTube, as well as landing the number one spot on Billboard’s streaming charts.

Tekashi’s lawyer, however, has hit back at the suit and accused Beat Demons of trying to ‘profit off’ the star’s success.

Attorney Lance Lazzaro told the publication: ‘The lawsuit is without merit and is another attempt to profit off Tekashi’s success.’

Lazzaro added: ‘We are confident that it will be dismissed.’

It’s not the first time Tekashi has faced legal action over Gooba, as producer Magix Enga filed a copyright claim in June last year and claimed the track had used one of his beats without his consent.

Enga’s claims led to Tekashi’s track being pulled from YouTube, before being reinstated just hours later.

Tekashi – real name Daniel Hernandez – released Gooba as his comeback single, after he was released from prison early due to coronavirus, and it debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

He had served 17-months of his two-year sentence. Tekashi was found guilty of racketeering charges.

A judge granted the artist early release from prison in upstate New York, after Tekashi’s lawyer expressed the rapper’s fears he would be vulnerable to coronavirus due to having asthma.

He was granted compassionate release and is now serving the rest of his sentence at home on supervised release.
