Winston Marshall has announced he’s ‘taking time away’ from Mumford and Sons after facing criticism for praising a right-wing pundit.

Earlier this week, the musician promoted the bestselling book from journalist Andy Ngo, Unmasked, which promises to delve ‘inside Antifa’s radical plan to destroy democracy’.

In the book, Ngo calls the far-right nationalist group Proud Boys a ‘pro-Trump fraternity’ and refers to left-wing activists as a ‘marauding gang’ whose mission is to ‘destroy the nation-state, America in particular’.

In a now-deleted tweet, Winston wrote to the author: ‘Finally had the time to read your important book. You’re a brave man.’

Some fans were left disappointed by his support for the book, with the star apologising and issuing a statement in response.

Winston is the banjoist and lead guitarist for the folk band, who are known for their hits including I Will Wait and Little Lion Man.

He’s a founding member of the group, which formed in 2007.

Before Mumford and Sons was created, Winston sang with bandmates Marcus Mumford and Ted Dwane in Laura Marling’s band.

He was also part of the group Captain Kick and the Cowboy Ramblers, a bluegrass sleaze rap band.

Winston was married to Glee star Dianna Agron, who played Quinn Fabray, for four years, from 2016 to 2020.

They kept their relationship, which began in 2015, incredibly private, and separated last year.

The band Mumford and Sons is made up of Winston alongside Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane.

Mumford & Sons – made up of Winston, Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane – shot to worldwide fame with their Grammy-nominated debut album Sigh No More in 2009, which produced the hit singles Little Lion Man and The Cave.

However, Winston revealed he’ll be taking some ‘time away’ from the band, following the backlash.

He said: ‘Over the past few days I have come to better understand the pain caused by the book I endorsed.

‘I have offended not only a lot of people I don’t know, but also those closest to me, including my bandmates and for that I am truly sorry.

‘As a result of my actions I am taking time away from the band to examine my blindspots.

‘For now, please know that I realise how my endorsements have the potential to be viewed as approvals of hateful, divisive behaviour. I apologise, as this was not at all my intention.’
