Matthew McConaughey is considering running for governor of Texas
Matthew McConaughey is considering running for governor of Texas.
The 51-year-old has gone from rom-com leading man to Oscar winner in his career, having embarked on the ‘McConaissance’ in the 2010s.
But now, he could be looking at whole other career path, as he discussed possibly running for governor of Texas.
The Dallas Buyers Club star appeared on The Balanced Voice podcast, and when host Rania Mankarious asked if he was considering the run, he said: ‘It’s a true consideration.’
McConaughey, who is dad to Levi, 12, Vida, 11, and Livingston, eight, with wife Camila Alves, continued: ‘I’m looking into now, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share.
‘What is my role, what is my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into now?’
The current governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, is up for re-election in 2022, so McConaughey could launch a campaign next year should he choose to run.
The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star didn’t dismiss the idea that he would enter politics during an appearance on The Hugh Hewitt Show last year.
He said: ‘I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me…
‘Politics seems to be a broken business to me right now, and when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.’
Politics and acting aren’t the only pies McConaughey has stuck his fingers in, as in 2019, he was confirmed as a new professor at the University of Texas.
The actor has been a a visiting professor at his alma mater the University of Texas at Austin since 2015, but was then announced as a full-time member of faculty teaching in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the Moody College of Communication.
McConaughey had previously graduated from the university in 1993 with a film degree.
As for his day job, McConaughey will next be heard in Sing 2, voicing Buster Moon in the animated sequel.
His last big screen outing came in 2019’s The Gentlemen.
