With Easter just around the corner, people across the nation will be stocking up on mounds of delicious hot cross buns, one of the traditional baked goods served to mark the religious festival.

Hot cross buns are typically sweet spiced buns made with flour and fruit such as currants and raisins, with a cross on the top.

But would you consider eating a hot cross bun made with chocolate caramel or – even – Marmite?

On today’s This Morning, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield put a variety of different recipes to the test, with Alice Beer laying out a series of options from supermarkets including Aldi Sainsbury’s.

One of the first they tried, the chilli and cheese hot cross buns from Aldi, had a ‘real kick to it’, Alice said, with Phillip chiming in that he quite liked the flavour, although he said that he wouldn’t describe it as a hot cross bun.

Next on the menu was the four tomato and Red Leicester hot cross bun from Asda, which appeared to be quite ‘dull’ and lacking in flavour, according to Holly and Phillip.

One of the most divisive varieties had to be the Marmite hot cross buns from M&S, causing a few This Morning viewers to express their disgust on Twitter.

Moving onto the sweet buns, Holly and Phillip also tried hot cross bun varieties including Aldi’s rhubarb and custard, Heston’s mocha, Sainsbury’s chocolate and caramel and Tesco’s apply and cinnamon.

But in the end, Holly affirmed that the traditional hot cross bun was the best.

One person said that they found the idea of a chocolate hot cross bun ‘disgusting’.

Meanwhile, another viewer reacting to the chilli hot cross bun tweeted: ‘If it ain’t broke, why fix it!! Chilli hot cross buns??!!’

So what do you reckon?

Does the good ole hot cross bun reign supreme, or would you give one of these alternative flavours a go? Have your say.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
