Kate Garraway has opened up about the conversations she has had with daughter Darcy following Sarah Everard’s disappearance.

There has been a huge search for the missing 33-year-old, who was last seen leaving a friend’s home in Clapham on the evening of March 3.

Following her disappearance, women across the country have shared stories and have opened up about how they do not feel safe walking on the streets.

Amid a growing debate around the safety of women in the UK, Kate shared the discussions she had been having with her daughter, 15, who had been standing her ground.

Speaking on today’s Good Morning Britain, Kate said: ‘I found myself as a parent having sort of confused conversations with myself… with my teenage daughter.

‘About dressing appropriately and things like that. And she, being a very 2021 teenager, is like, “Why should I not dress like this? It’s nothing to do with me.”

‘And then I find myself saying, “I’m trying to keep you safe!”

‘It’s almost like my generation has an assumption that we have a responsibility to dress in a certain way. And it’s wonderful maybe, that this generation will be able to throw that off.’

Kate’s comments come after Sarah’s disappearance sparked a nationwide debate – with women sharing their own experiences on social media, of dangers they face when out alone.

A socially distanced vigil for all women who ‘feel unsafe on the streets and face violence every day’ is planned to take place at 6pm in Clapham Common, south London on Saturday.

Sarah’s family also shared a poignant tribute to the marketing executive, describing her as a ‘shining example to us all’.

‘Our beautiful daughter Sarah was taken from us and we are appealing for any information that will help to solve this terrible crime,’ they said in a statement.

‘Sarah was bright and beautiful – a wonderful daughter and sister. She was kind and thoughtful, caring and dependable. She always put others first and had the most amazing sense of humour.

‘She was strong and principled and a shining example to us all. We are very proud of her and she brought so much joy to our lives.

‘We would like to thank our friends and family for all their support during this awful time and we would especially like to thank Sarah’s friends who are working tirelessly to help.

‘We are so grateful to the police and would like to thank them for all they are doing. We are now pleading for additional help from the public.

‘Please come forward and speak to the police if you have any information. No piece of information is too insignificant. Thank you.’

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
