Razzies 2021: Robert Downey Jr and Anne Hathaway lead nominations for worst actor and actress
The nominations for the 2021 Razzies have been announced, and it’s quite the selection – from Robert Downey Jr’s performance in Dolittle, to Anne Hathaway’s role in The Witches.
For the uninitiated, the Golden Raspberry Awards, nicknamed the Razzies, celebrate the worst films and performances of the year.
While it’s not exactly the most coveted award, stars over the years have been great sports, most notably Sandra Bullock, who collected her 2010 award in person, giving an impassioned speech.
This time around, the year 2020 is actually being honoured with its own Razzie, as it’s honoured as ‘The Worst Calendar Year EVER’.
Meanwhile, the nominees for worst picture haven’t disappointed, with Netflix’s 365 Days, Absolute Proof, Dolittle, Fantasy Island, and Sia’s Music being nominated.
365 faced backlash after it showed a kidnapper attempting to make his victim fall in love with him, although lead actor Michele Morrone defended the movie’s themes.
Meanwhile, Sia’s Music has been widely criticised for its portrayal of autistic people, with the singer recently apologising and pledging to remove particularly distressing scenes from future versions.
Actress Kate was notably also nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in Music.
Iron Man actor Robert is nominated for worst actor for Dolittle, alongside Mike Lindell (Absolute Proof), Michele Morrone (365 Days), Adam Sandler (Hubie Halloween), and David Spade (Wrong Missy).
The Princess Diaries star Anne (The Last Thing He Wanted and Roald Dahl’s The Witches) leads the worst actress nominations, with Katie Holmes (Brahms: The Boy II and The Secret: Dare to Dream), Kate Hudson (Music), Lauren Lapkus (The Wrong Missy) and Anna-Maria Sieklucka (365 Days) also in the running.
Last year, Cats cleaned up after the star-studded movie was widely panned by critics and viewers alike.
The 2020 Razzies winners were announced after the ceremony itself was cancelled last minute amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Dame Judi Dench was previously a frontrunner for worst supporting actress for her performance as Old Deuteronomy in Cats, and confessed she hadn’t even seen the film.
Of her Razzies nod, she told Radio 4’s Front Row: ‘As far as I know that’s a first!’
‘I didn’t read anything about the response to [Cats] nor have I seen it.’
