Cheryl has revealed she broke down in tears while on the phone to Sarah Harding amid her breast cancer battle.

Sarah, 39, revealed last August she been diagnosed with advanced cancer, which had spread to different parts of her body.

In an excerpt from Sarah’s upcoming autobiography Hear Me Out, published by The Times, her former Girls Aloud bandmate Cheryl, 37, recalled the time she ‘lost it and started crying’ when she was ‘relayed some terrible news’ regarding Sarah’s battle with the disease over FaceTime.

Cheryl said: ‘Mostly, I try to keep my own emotions in check, but on one FaceTime call with her the other day, I couldn’t hold it in.

‘She relayed some terrible news, and I lost it and started crying. I tried to move the phone out of the way so she couldn’t see my face.’

She added: ‘The mad thing is, it ended up with Sarah comforting me.’

Cheryl praised Sarah, referring to her as ‘fiercely independent’, but noted she and the rest of her bandmates – Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh – would see their pal differently to how she looked at herself.

She continued: ‘That’s probably the thing I love most about Sarah, she doesn’t have a bad bone in her body. Sarah’s downfall has always been about her insecurity.

‘I guess that’s what makes her such a confusing character. How the rest of us girls saw Sarah was not the way she saw herself. It was like two completely different worlds.’

Cheryl also highlighted her ‘unique’ singing voice, saying she would always ‘deliver an incredible performance’ during Girls Aloud concerts.

In her book, Sarah revealed she had been told by doctors that the next Christmas ‘would probably be her last’, and that she ended up in a coma after contracting sepsis from a procedure before her treatment began.

The Celebrity Big Brother winner had kept her diagnosis and her treatment under wraps from the public, but in August, she told fans via social media that she was fighting cancer.

Sharing a selfie from her hospital bed, she wrote: ‘Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a couple of weeks ago I received the devastating news that the cancer has advanced to other parts of my body.

‘I’m currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can.

‘I understand this might be shocking to read on social media and that really isn’t my intention. But last week it was mentioned online that I had been seen in hospital, so I feel now is the time to let people know what’s going on and this is the best way I can think of to do so.

‘My amazing mum, family and close friends are helping me through this, and I want to say a thank you to the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who have been and continue to be heroes.’

Sarah said she went public with her diagnosis to encourage others not to put off getting checked due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In December, the Love Machine singer later revealed while going through treatment, she had been working on her life story.

Sarah rose to fame when she landed a place in Girls Aloud after competing on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.

The band went on to become of the UK’s biggest girl groups of the 21st century, achieving four number one hits, 20 consecutive top 10 singles and a Brit Award.

Sarah Harding’s Hear Me Out is set for release this Thursday.
