Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding ‘probably won’t get another Christmas’ as cancer spreads
Sarah Harding has been told by doctors that she ‘probably’ won’t get another Christmas.
The Girls Aloud star confirmed last year that she had been diagnosed with advanced cancer, with the disease spreading from her breast to different parts of her body.
In an excerpt from her upcoming book Hear Me Out, published by The Times, the 38-year-old said that in December, her doctor ‘told me that the upcoming Christmas would probably be my last’.
Sarah added that she does not want an exact prognosis, and is focusing on being comfortable and as pain-free as possible.
The Promise singer wrote: ‘I’m trying to live and enjoy every second of my life, however long it might be. I am having a glass of wine or two during all this, because it helps me relax. I’m sure some people might think that’s not a great idea, but I want to try to enjoy myself.
‘I’m at a stage now where I don’t know how many months I have left. Who knows, maybe I’ll surprise everyone, but that’s how I’m looking at things.’
Sarah said that she is hoping she gets to see all her friends together for one last party.
She said: ‘I think what I’d really like to do is to see everyone – all my friends, all together. One last time. Then I’d throw a great big f*** off party as a way to say thank you and goodbye.’
In her book, Sarah explained that she underwent a mastectomy and had been getting chemotherapy, which was going well.
Unfortunately, another tumour was then discovered either at the base of Sarah’s spine or on her brain.
The popstar said that the tumour meant that her disease and her prognosis have worsened, and admitted that the rumour ‘is the thing that scares me more than anything because.I think it will be the thing that affects me the most’.
Sarah was offered radiotherapy on her skull but has chosen to stuck to a chemo plan, as she doesn’t want to lose her hair ‘if there’s a chance I’ve only got six months’.
The Celebrity Big Brother winner kept her diagnosis and her treatment under wraps from the public, but in August, told fans via social media that she was fighting cancer.
Sarah wrote on Instagram: ‘Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a couple of weeks ago I received the devastating news that the cancer has advanced to other parts of my body.
‘I’m currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can.’
‘I understand this might be shocking to read on social media and that really isn’t my intention. But last week it was mentioned online that I had been seen in hospital, so I feel now is the time to let people know what’s going on and this is the best way I can think of to do so.
‘My amazing mum, family and close friends are helping me through this, and I want to say a thank you to the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who have been and continue to be heroes.’
Sarah said that she went public with her diagnosis to encourage others not to put off getting checked due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Ascot-born singer shot to fame when she landed a place in Girls Aloud after competing on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.
Sarah, Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, Nadine Coyle and Kimberly Walsh went on to become the UK’s biggest selling girl group of the 21st century, achieving four number ones, 20 consecutive top 10 singles two number one albums and a Brit Award.
Hear Me Out is set for release this Thursday.
