The Russo Brothers have congratulated James Cameron after Avatar has surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the highest-grossing film of all time again.

The 2009 science fiction film, which was directed by Cameron, 66, has reclaimed the top spot after being re-issued for China, taking an estimated RMB 58million (£6.4 million) following its re-release on Friday.

It’s closed the gap between the two movies, which previously stood at about $7.82 million (£5.6 million).

According to Deadline, the current estimated total for Avatar is around $2.798 billion (£2.0098 billion) versus Endgame’s $2.797 billion (£2.0091 billion).

Taking to Twitter following the news, Anthony and Joseph Russo, who directed Avengers: Endgame, have since shared a stunning piece of Avatar-inspired artwork created by artist Boss Logic.

‘Passing the gauntlet back to you… @JimCameron,’ they wrote. ‘Thanks for the beautiful art @bosslogic.’

Boss Logic had posted similar art following after the Marvel film overtook Avatar at the box office in 2019, just three months after it was released to cinemas.

‘We did what it takes! #avengersendgame,’ he wrote.

Avengers: Endgame executive producer James Gunn has also tweeted his support to James, writing: ‘Well it was fun while it lasted, but I am no longer an Executive Producer of the biggest grossing film of all time.

‘Congrats to James Cameron & the #Avatar team! (And of course @zoesaldana, who is in kind of a no lose situation here).’

Following both Avatar and Avengers: Endgame on the list of highest grossing movies includes Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Infinity War.

Although Cameron has yet to comment on the news, it’s clear there’s a lot of love between him and Marvel, with him recently sharing a sweet photo of Iron Man director and Happy Hogan actor Jon Favreau visiting the Avatar set.

The filmmaker is currently working on another four sequels to the original 2009 film, the first of which is due to be released in 2022.

Avatar 2 is set to star Kate Winslet as well as returning actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, who also appeared in Avengers: Endgame.

Cameron previously revealed that filming for the sequel has concluded, and in December, he shared a behind the scenes sneak peek.

Sharing a photo of a boat on set, as well as a dramatic crane, he said: ‘The last set for 2020 filming – The Madator (a 50’ forward command boat) on a 16-ton, 360 degree motion-control base.

‘Three Technocranes and a Russian Arm mounted on top of a Mercedes-Benz. Just another day on the set of the Avatar sequels.’

Sounds complicated, but we can’t wait to watch either way.
