Antiques Roadshow guest shocked as aunt’s plate she thought was worth £400 valued at £10k
An Antiques Roadshow guest was stunned to learn the plate she thought was worth £400 was actually worth a heck of a lot more, with expert Will Farmer praising it as one of the ‘best ever’ he had seen on the programme.
On Sunday’s episode, set at Forty Hall in Enfield, north London, the guest brought in a striking orange and yellow plate to be valued, and was floored when Will told her it was worth £10,000.
She told him: ‘Originally it came from my very glamourous aunt and it’s just come down the family and now it’s with me.’
Will revealed that it was a piece by ceramicist Clarice Cliff called Sunburst dating back to the 1930s.
‘I’m very envious, I wish it was mine,’ he added of the ribbed charger.
‘I’ve been doing this show for 15 years now and over the time I’ve done pieces of Clarice and I’ve seen some great things, but I will tell you now in 15 years, this is the best piece of Clarice I have ever seen on the show.’
Will then decided to tease the guest by first telling her the plate is worth £5000, to which she responded: ‘I know I shouldn’t say it but you’re joking?’
The expert replied: ‘Yes, I am joking. It’s worth £10,000.’
The guest was left reeling at the figure, telling Will: ‘Well I said £400 give or take, but £10,000, oh my goodness.’
She was probably a lot more polite than we would have been in her position…
‘It is a joy. It is Clarice at her absolute best,’ Will said before thanking the guest for bringing the piece in.
Antiques Roadshow airs Sundays at 7pm on BBC One.
