Dancing On Ice 2021: Sonny Jay beats Faye Brookes to be crowned winner after wowing fans with stunning Bolero
Dancing On Ice has crowned its 2021 winner, with radio presenter Sonny Jay beating Faye Brookes to take home the trophy.
Sunday night’s final saw Sonny, Faye and Colin Jackson go head-to-head to battle it out for the Dancing On Ice title, with Sonny and Coronation Street star Faye making it to the final two.
They were tasked with performing their own Bolero routine inspired by Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean’s iconic Olympics performance, with fans being blown away by their efforts.
As hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield revealed he had won, Sonny was left shocked and teared up, as he told the pair: ‘That’s mental.’
The final saw him nab his first 10s of the series, with Sonny and his skating partner Angela Egan then achieving a perfect score of 40 for his Popeye themed skate.
When Phil joked that Sonny had waited until the final show to get his first 10 from the panel, Sonny replied: ‘I know, had to leave it to the last minute.’
He said of his time on Dancing On Ice: ‘I’ve loved this experience it’s been great,’ while runner-up Faye described the experience as ‘surreal’.
Both stars impressed viewers at home with their Bolero skates, with fans seeming divided over whose routine was better.
Some viewers thought Sonny’s Bolero was his best skate of the entire series, while others complimented the star for showing a different side to his skating.
‘Congratulations to Sonny, worth winner Bolero was sublime,’ one fan tweeted, while another said: ‘I loved Sonny Jay’s Bolero it was different to his usual energetic skates.’
Faye – who was forced to change partners late on into the competition due to her original skating partner Hamish Gaman injuring his finger – said she had ‘loved’ her time on the show, despite how crazy it may have been.
‘I keep saying it again – I still can’t believe I’m living this dream, it honestly feels surreal, I’m loving every second of it, how crazy it’s been, I’ve loved it,’ she said moments before the series’ winner was announced.
Former sprinter Colin finished in third place and said he’d had a ‘phenomenal’ time throughout the competition.
He managed to bag two perfect scores of 40 for both his routines – the first choreographed by Jane and Chris to Hot, Hot, Hot and the second being a repeat of his routine from movie week to Whitney Houston film The Bodyguard.
This year’s final also saw the return of the class of 2021 to the studio, with injured stars Denise Van Outen and Jason Donovan sharing updates.
Dancing On Ice was plagued by injury and drama from the get-go, as Denise suffered a dislocated shoulder, Jason struggled with back problems, Billie Faiers was forced to pull out of the competition due to a head injury after a nasty fall and professional skater Hamish Gaman was forced to exit the competition early following a hand injury.
Stars were also forced to withdraw from the series due to coronavirus protocols in place, with both Rufus Hound and Joe Warren-Plant having to forgo their place due to testing positive for Covid-19.
Myleene Klass was the first celebrity to be voted out of the competition after making her debut and later revealed that she had torn her meniscus – cartilage in the knee – from her time on the show.
As a result, she was forced to give the group dance a miss, joking while sat on the side of the rink: ‘You broke my knee, so I’m safely rink side tonight.’
Former stars of the series, however, made their return to the ice, with comedian Matt Richardson no doubt being left red-faced after taking a tumble…
