Gogglebox star Tom Malone has spoken out to defend his girlfriend in the face of ‘abuse’ online after he announced he had quit the Channel 4 programme.

Tom decided to say goodbye to Gogglebox after nearly seven years on the sofa with his family commenting on the latest TV programmes.

He took to TikTok on Sunday to well and truly shut down speculation he had quit because producers wouldn’t let his girlfriend appear.

He urged people to stop sending nasty comments to Bryony, adding that she never wanted to be on the programme in the first place.

Tom said it is ‘not that simple to just put someone on with us because of contracts and stuff.’

The TV star went on: ‘Bryony has actually never wanted to be on the show.

‘She’s got her own career as a model, she’s a very good model, why would she leave that to come on the show?

‘It’s all rubbish, she’s had a lot of abuse over it so please stop because it’s not fair on her.’

Announcing his exit Tom said he ‘loved every minute’ of watching the box with mum Julie, dad Tom Senior and brother Shaun.

‘I’ve loved every minute and I’m eternally grateful to Channel 4 and Studio Lambert for allowing me to be a part of the show. But new opportunities are knocking on the door and it’s time to explore them,’ he said.

‘I look forward to enjoying the show as a viewer and not having to worry about saying something stupid. PS. Don’t worry my parents and brother will still be on the show to keep you entertained every Friday.’
