“I Won Both of Them” – Roman Gonzalez on his Loss to Juan Francisco Estrada

Roman Gonzalez

Roman Gonzalez and Juan Estrada unquestionably put on the best fight of 2021 until now. The fight stayed true to its hype as it was a sheer 12-round war between two staunch champions of the division. Estrada, who lost to Gonzalez in 2012, avenged his loss in this rematch and settled the scores with Nicaragua pugilist.

Many expected this bout to be a primal boxing contest. But ‘Chocolatito’ and ‘El Gallo’ shut the naysayers by going all out against each other. Also, a major chunk of boxing enthusiasts believed that this was Gonzalez’s win. But the match officials shook everyone when they adjudged ‘El Gallo’ as the winner.

The two made their intentions clear on winning this fight right from the first second, and that was certainly visible tonight.

After the fight, ‘Chocolatito’ detailed his notion on this battle.

He said, “I won both of them,”

“Whatever he wants, we’ll do it.” (h/t Lance Pugmire)

On the flip side, the champion Estrada seemed elevated with this win. In the post-fight interview, he asserted he has to take on the mandatory Sri Saket Rungvisai first. But he assured he’ll definitely come back to Roman Gonzalez. (h/t Lance Pugmire).

Nobody expected the fight to go this far. Being a favorite, ‘Chocolatito’ performed the way he was supposed to. However, it was the underdog, Estrada’s night, and he left the ring as a unified super-flyweight king.

Should there be an immediate rematch between Roman Gonzalez and Juan Estrada?

Back when the duo collided in 2012, Roman Gonzalez defeated ‘El Gallo’ with a unanimous decision. He gave a stern test to a polished Juan Estrada in this fight, yet he failed to score a win.

The duo traded substantial punches with each other, and ranked this event as one of the best for 2021.

However, a trilogy fight between these two entices the fans the most at this stage. Also, a trilogy fight will not only settle on a true winner but also a stout unified champion at the super-flyweight class.

It’ll be interesting to see how things play out for both these fighters in the coming months. There promotions will need to sit and iron out all the possible stuff for a trilogy, as it lures the fans massively.

What do you make of the judges’ decision for the Estrada vs Gonzalez fight?
