Outlander fans are brimming with excitement over the news that the time-travelling series has been renewed for season seven while the sixth series is still in production.

Ever since Outlander launched in 2014, viewers have been swept up in a world of romance and adventure, as former World War II nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) finds herself transported back to mid-18th Century Scotland, where she meets Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

The historical drama’s fifth season was released last year during the coronavirus pandemic, with filming for season six currently taking place in Scotland.

But even before series six is released, fans have been assured that a seventh season is definitely on the cards.

In a video shared on the official Outlander social media channels, members of the cast, including Caitriona, Sam, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin, break the news.

The clip shows them all reading fan questions, which Sophie notes are ‘all on exactly the same subject matter’ – whether it’s going to be renewed for season seven.

After reading out several messages from fans, Sam makes the big announcement, exclaiming excitedly: ‘We are coming back for season seven, yes!’

Sophie and Caitriona expressed their gratitude towards all those who watch the programme, as Sophie says: ‘We could not do it without you,’ before Caitriona adds: ‘And we can’t wait to continue the story with all of you.’

Richard, who plays Roger Mackenzie in the series, adds: ‘You want it, you got it.’

As can be expected, avid fans of Outlander were ecstatic over the news.

‘Omg! You guys have just improved my day, my week, my month… everything. There will be season 7!!!!’ one person tweeted.

‘Well, there was me thinking nothing could cheer me up today and you’ve proved me wrong,’ someone else wrote.

Another fan jokingly said: ‘HOW DARE YOU give me all this JOY!’ while one Twitter user added: ‘Such wonderful news we are so excited!!!!’

During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Sam opened up about how Outlander helped him prepare for his role in SAS: Red Notice.

The actor also recently spoke out about how ‘tough’ it has been filming season six due to ‘Covid protocols’ and the ‘horrendous’ weather in Scotland.

Outlander airs on Starz in the US, while seasons one to five are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
