Warning: spoilers ahead for WandaVision.

Throughout the release of WandaVision on Disney Plus right up until the season finale, the MCU series dumbfounded viewers with its multitude of mysteries… one of which was the meaning behind the perplexing, Easter Egg-filled commercials.

While watching WandaVision, Marvel fans became engrossed as they learnt more about the fake, sitcom-like reality created by Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) in Westview, where she and Vision (Paul Bettany) were kept under the watchful eye of villainous witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn).

The show’s aesthetic took inspiration from sitcoms throughout the decades, paying homage to classics such as The Dick Van Dyke Show in the 1950s and Malcolm in the Middle in the 2000s.

Attention to detail was key when recreating classic sitcom gags, all the way down to the commercial breaks.

WandaVision featured several adverts in the series, all of which starred the same two actors and made reference to significant moments in the MCU.

So what did the commercials really mean?

What is the meaning behind the commercials in WandaVision?

When the commercials first popped up in WandaVision, there were some fans who thought that the man and the woman who starred in them may be the parents of Wanda and her twin brother Pietro Maximoff.

However, in episode eight, a flashback scene showed Wanda as a child with her brother and parents in Sokovia, with her mother and father played by different actors.

During a recent interview with TVLine, WandaVision director Matt Shakman explained that the people in the commercials were simply residents of Westview who had been assigned roles by Wanda – just like everyone else in the neighbourhood.

‘Wanda gave roles to almost everyone in Westview,’ Matt said.

‘Those two actors, or townspeople, that we picked to be in the commercials were meant to be the same as everything else – that they were iterating through time, in the same way that Wanda’s car is a red Buick that iterates through time.

‘Wanda has cast these two to be her commercial actors, and they appear in every single episode, and they are part of the broadcast.’

The director added that the adverts were ‘also meant to be a repository for Wanda’s unconscious’, explaining: ‘She’s putting something into these commercials that are clues to some of the bigger thematics in the show.’

What MCU Easter Eggs were there in the commercials?

There were several Easter Eggs that referenced the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) in the commercials, which also drew viewers back to the beginning of Wanda’s involvement with the Avengers.

In episode two, a commercial for a watch came with the slogan ‘Strucker: He’ll make time for you’ – in reference to Hydra’s Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, who experimented on Wanda and Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) before they met the Avengers.

In episode five, the advert promoted Lagos paper towels, which of course refers to the Nigerian city of Lagos were Wanda inadvertently caused a fatal explosion in Captain America: Civil War.

How many episodes of WandaVision are there?

There are nine episodes of WandaVision in total.

During its run, there was speculation that there was going to be a secret 10th episode – but these rumours turned out to be nothing but hearsay.

A week after the WandaVision finale was released, Disney Plus launched a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the show titled Assembled: The Making of WandaVision.

WandaVision is available to watch on Disney Plus.
