Bloodlands has been given the green light for a second series, which is just as well – as fans are demanding answers following the tense series finale.

The fourth and final episode of series one, which aired on Sunday night, saw the identity of killer Goliath finally revealed.

After the blame shifted throughout the series, it was revealed in the finale that James Nesbitt’s DCI Tom Brannick was responsible for the murders all along and what trying to cover up his grim doings.

In stunning scenes, Tom confessed to Tori Matthews (Lisa Dwan) that he had been blackmailed by David Corry into killing the victims that were found buried on a remote island in episode one.

The instalment ended with Tom comforting his daughter Izzy, who was disturbed after learning of Tori’s death, at home.

Viewers were left stunned and in suspense at the conclusion, but the BBC has announced that more is on the way as the police officer tries to keep his past secret, adding that Bloodlands was the channel’s biggest new drama launch since June 2020 with 8.2million viewers.

Star James, who is reprising his role in series two, said: ‘I’m thrilled that viewers responded to Bloodlands so positively and that we will be returning for a second series.

‘I’m always happy to be back in Northern Ireland and to reveal even more about Tom Brannick.’

Executive producer Jed Mercurio, the creator of Line of Duty, added: ‘It’s a tribute to the quality of Chris Brandon’s writing, the hard work of our crew and the brilliant performance of our cast led by James Nesbitt.

‘We’re grateful for the outstanding support we’ve received from the BBC and Northern Ireland Screen and can’t wait to reward Bloodlands fans with another twisty case for Brannick and co.’

Bloodlands is available on BBC iPlayer.
