Tom Ellis has revealed that he once auditioned for a role in time-travelling drama series Outlander.

The actor, who is best known for playing Lucifer Morningstar in TV series Lucifer, explained that he’d got his hands on script for Outlander and after being left impressed chose to audition.

In an interview with Outlander’s Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in the series, for Square Mile, Tom explained that he had tried his luck at auditioning for Black Jack Randall that was eventually brought to life by Tobias Menzies.

Tom and Sam have long been close pals and he confessed in the Q&A: ‘I’m going to let you into a little secret. I auditioned for Outlander.’

‘Not for Jamie Fraser, but for Tobias Menzie’s part,’ Tom revealed.

‘I remember reading the script thinking, “This is really good.”‘

Imagining Tom as Randall, Sam told him: ‘I’m not sure how I’d have felt having you, I don’t know, assault me, shall we say.’

In season one of Outlander, Jamie is sexually abused by Randall in prison.

‘That would have been tricky,’ Tom agreed, as Sam decided that actually his friend would have been pretty ‘brilliant’ in the role.

Sam said: ‘Actually, you would have been brilliant… because Frank Randall is this charming, loveable character and then Black Jack – the other part you would have had to play – is just violent.’

He added: ‘It’s a great part. Tobias, of course, does an amazing job, but that would have been so different.’

Sam explained that he’d never expected to be starring in Outlander for as long as he has, with the series recently announcing its seventh series.

Season six is currently still in production and filming is taking place in Scotland, while series five of Outlander was released last year during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sam was seen breaking the news in a clip of the cast shared to Outlander’s official Twitter account.

He revealed: ‘We are coming back for season seven, yes!’

Naturally, fans were seen freaking out over the announcement and shared their excitement of yet more seasons of Outlander to come.

The series also stars Caitriona Balfe (who plays Claire Fraser), Sophie Skelton (Brianna Fraser) and Richard Rankin (Roger Mackenzie Wakefield).

Outlander airs on Starz in the US, while seasons one to five are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
