Oscars 2021: Olivia Colman, Riz Ahmed and Vanessa Kirby among British stars flying the flag in nominations
The Oscars 2021 nominations have been dominated by a host of talented Brits, including Vanessa Kirby, Riz Ahmed and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Olivia Colman is leading the charge in the actress in a supporting role category for her performance in The Father. It comes just two years after she scooped the actress in a leading role award for her turn in The Favourite in 2019.
The Crown star Vanessa Kirby has landed her first ever best actress nomination for her harrowing performance as a mother grieving the death of her newborn baby in Netflix drama Pieces of a Woman.
She’s up against fellow Brit Carey Mulligan who has earned a nod for her performance in Promising Young Woman.
Daniel Kaluuya is competing in the best supporting actor category for his turn as Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. It’s his second Oscar nomination following his best actor nod for Get Out in 2018.
Sacha Baron Cohen has been recognised for his performance as the eccentric Abbie Hoffman in Netflix court drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Riz Ahmed has received an actor in a leading role nod for his role in South of Metal and it’s proved to be a strong category for British competition, as he’s facing Anthony Hopkins for The Father and Gary Oldman for Mank.
It’s been a historic year for female directors with two of them nominated this year – Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell have been recognised for their respective movies Nomadland and Promising Young Woman.
The 93rd Academy Awards is due to take place on April 25, 2021.
