Piers Morgan makes dig at ITV after Good Morning Britain departure
Piers Morgan has made a dig ITV following his departure from Good Morning Britain last week, joking that an excerpt about the programme from one of his books has aged terribly.
The 55-year-old left the show after refusing to apologise for comments he made about Meghan Markle’s mental health and her claims of racism within the royal family during her tell-all Oprah interview.
Days after stating that he had become the ‘latest victim of cancel culture’, Piers took to Twitter on Monday to clarify his thoughts with an excerpt from his 2020 book Wake Up.
It read: ‘Cancel culture is not about whether obvious racists should be given platforms. It’s about potentially seeing your life and career turned upside down for expressing opinions that the woke brigade don’t like about anything.
‘I’m lucky in that although there have been repeated attempts to ‘cancel’ me, including petitions to have me sacked, I’ve survived because I have strong-minded employers who refuse to bow to the mob, and I have a powerful TV, newspaper column and social media platform to fight fire with fire.’
Piers, who appeared to be praising GMB in the excerpt written last year, wrote alongside his post witheringly: ‘This entry from my book aged like a bottle of corked Liebfraumilch.’
His exit followed Ofcom’s investigation announcement into Good Morning Britain after 41,000 complaints were made referring to him ‘not believing’ Meghan’s comments about her mental health struggles.
ITV released a statement regarding Piers’ departure, which read: ‘Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.’
Since his exit, fans have been campaigning for his return to the show, with almost 200,000 signing petitions.
Piers, who was replaced by Ben Shephard on Monday’s GMB, has, however, ruled out coming back to the programme.
‘I won’t be going back, but thanks to everyone who has signed these petitions,’ he said in a tweet. ‘Normally, people start petitions to have me fired or deported, so this is a pleasant surprise.’
It is not yet known what Piers’ next career move will be, but he has promised that he will be back after being ‘cancelled’ by ‘woke crowd’.
It was recently reported that the broadcaster is in a £10million bidding war by TV executives, with claims that he could be headed to GB news or Rupert Murdoch’s upcoming News UK TV venture.
