Kate Garraway has shared her first photograph of husband Derek Draper in hospital – a year after he was placed into an induced coma with coronavirus.

Derek, who has been married to Kate for 16 years, was rushed to hospital last March with coronavirus before being placed into a coma.

While Kate has said he is now free of the virus, the long-term issues continue to have a massive effect on his body and he is yet to come out of hospital.

He has also suffered kidney failure, liver damage and now has holes in his heart and lungs. The former political lobbyist has emerged from his deep coma but is in a minimal state of consciousness.

The Good Morning Britain presenter is seen talking about Derek’s health battle in a new trailer for documentary Finding Derek, which follows the past year of the family’s life.

‘Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated this year,’ Kate explains in the documentary.

‘Is he going to be able to come back or will he be alive but no longer the person he was?’

Kate, who has children Darcy, 14 and Billy, 11, with Derek, has been warned multiple times that he may not make it, and was even left waiting 24 hours after mistakenly being told he might have died

Due to the changing guidelines as the pandemic continues, the TV star has been unable to see her husband since before Christmas.

Kate has since revealed that doctors had told her it is ‘highly unlikely’ that Derek would make a good recovery, but could make a ‘reasonable recovery’, which they described as ‘being able to hold a hairbrush’ by himself.

As well as Derek’s struggles, Kate has admitted that the family began to struggle financially without him.

Friends including Piers Morgan and Emma Willis has also been helping the family stay afloat during the toughest of times, with Emma sending over a hamper of Christmas food to ensure they ate properly.

Speaking to The Times about what the future holds, Kate said: ‘The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in for ever. And I just thought, this is a horror story.

‘I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know. The change in his body is shocking.’

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs March 23 on ITV.
