Following on from the heartbreaking season finale of WandaVision, the next Marvel series on the horizon is The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which is set to be launched on Disney Plus.

Set six months after the events of the 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) release follows Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), otherwise known as Falcon, and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier.

Not only do they have to work through their own rivalries, having both separately been bosom pals with the one and only Captain America (Chris Evans), but they must also team up to combat a new threat in the form of the Flag-Smashers, an anti-patriotism group.

On top of that, the series is throwing a few more familiar faces into the mix, with Emily VanCamp returning as Sharon Carter and the villainous Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) back on the scene.

So who’s in the cast of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, when is it being released and how many episodes are there?

Who’s in the cast?

Anthony and Sebastian will be reprising their roles as Sam and Bucky respectively, with the Falcon and the Winter Soldier joining forces after previously being at odds with one another.

They will be joined by the returning Sharon Carter (Emily), the niece of the legendary Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), who was an agent at S.H.I.E.L.D. before it was discovered that Hydra had infiltrated the organisation behind the scenes.

In the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War, Helmut Zemo (Daniel) strove to tear the Avengers apart from within, resulting in Captain America and the Winter Soldier facing off against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr).

Despite being apprehended by Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) at the end of the film, Zemo is returning to wreak more havoc in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, this time wearing his character’s signature purple mask from the comic books.

Some Marvel fans believe that in the series, Zemo’s purple mask may be explained as taking inspiration from Thanos (Picture: Marvel)

Also starring in the Marvel series are Wyatt Russell as John F Walker, who the government has chosen to become the next Captain America; Erin Kellyman as Karli Morgenthau, the leader of the anti-patriotism group the Flag-Smashers; Georges St-Pierre who is reprising his role as mercenary Georges Batroc from Captain America: The Winter Soldier; and Adepero Oduye as Sarah Wilson, Sam’s sister.

Don Cheadle will also be making a return as James Rhodes, aka War Machine.

When is The Falcon and The Winter Soldier being released?

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will premiere on Disney Plus on Friday March 19.

As WandaVision released new episodes at 8am GMT on Fridays, it seems likely The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will follow suit.

How many episodes are there?

There will be six episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in total, three less than WandaVision.

They will be launched on a weekly basis, meaning that the season finale will come out on Friday April 23.

After the series ends, Disney Plus’ Marvel anthology series Assembled will take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the programme, just like it did with WandaVision.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is launching on Friday on Disney Plus.
